DIY Tutorial from a Catch My Party Member - How to Make a Rag Garland

(Enter our $50 CSN giveaway by telling us what you love about spring!)

I saw a photo of this rag garland Jennifer W made for her daughter Riley's 1st Birthday and I thought it was so adorable, I had to ask how she make it. She put together this easy tutorial for us, so a big thank you to you, Jennifer!

When planning my daughter Riley's first birthday party I wanted a unique banner or garland to hang on our fireplace. I saw these rag garlands used in holiday decor on various blogs and decided to try my hand at making one. I used them on the mantle, on the high chair and over the punch bowl. If you love them as much as I do, here's how to make your own.

SUPPLIES:

  • Fabric
  • Twine
  • Ruler
  • Scissors (or pinking shears)

First decide where you will hang your garland and how long it will need to be. Measure out a piece of twine in that length. I add a few inches to each end and add a knot for hanging.

Next choose your fabric. This is a great project to use up your fabric "stash." You could also incorporate ribbon into your garland. For my cupcake party garland I cut my fabric into 9x2 inch strips but you could vary this depending upon the look you want.

Now begin tying your fabric strips onto your twine. Just a single knot, pulled tight. As you tie, push the strips to one end of the garland. Personally I prefer a random look but you could also add strips in a pattern.

Note: For this project it took 10 strips to complete 3 inches of garland.

These rag garland are a fun and inexpensive addition to any party or holiday decor.

Jennifer, thank you again! I love how "shabby chic" they are, which, if you read my blog, is one of my favorite party styles.

Check out the rest of the cute "cupcake" party Jennifer threw for her daughter, Riley. The cupcakes are beautiful and the personalized Jones sodas are a nice touch, too.

Also, if you make a rag garland of your own, please send photos so I can post them.

FREE St. Patrick's Day Printables from Rose & Cook

(Enter our $50 CSN giveaway by telling us what you love about spring!)

St. Patrick's Day is coming fast and we want to help you decorate your party, so here are some FREE party circles that Rose A from Rose & Cook generously designed for us to give away. Thank you, Rose!

Download the high resolution party circles here.

Rose lives in France, and when I asked her if people in France celebrated St. Patrick's Day, she said, "St Patrick's day is celebrate by some people like.....me! :- D In fact I used to live in Aix en Provence, in the South of France, and we used to celebrate St Patrick's day because there are a lot of Irish students there."

Rose also made these savory St. Patrick's day spinach cupcakes with a mix of herbs, garlic, and homemade cream cheese. Yum! The recipe is here, but it's still mostly in French. I wonder if Google can translate it? :)

To learn more about Rose check out her blog Rose & Cook where she provides (in French) easy DIY decorating and cake decorating ideas for all occasions.  Also check out her gorgeous parties on our site. I love how she brings a real flair to what she does.

TRENDS: Mad Scientist Parties on Catch My Party

(Enter our $50 CSN giveaway by telling us what you love about spring!)

I'm loving the trend of Mad Scientist parties. They work for a boy or a girl, the experiments are cool (plus they're a built-in party activity), and they celebrate the geek in all of us. Check out these party photos from our main site...

Shelley K's Mad Scientist Birthday Party Experiments:

  • Soda explosions using Mentos we called volcano eruptions
  • Invisible ink using lemon juice and a blow dryer or candle flame
  • Instant snow
  • Flubber
  • We also used film canisters and made the tops blow off and called them rocket canisters

Christine K's Caitlyn's Mad Science Birthday Party Experiments:

  • Blow up balloons with baking soda and vinegar
  • Instant snow
  • Creating a vortex using 2 plastic soda bottles connected with a tornado tube
  • Diet Coke and Mentos geysers
  • We hired a "Mad Scientist" but I recommend just getting Steve Spangler's Ultimate Science Party kit or buying the experiments individually and doing them yourself

Judy S's Mad Science Birthday Experiments:

  • Bubbling potions with beakers and flasks
  • Dry ice to see how different metals reacted with it
  • The kids got to take home a pet tornado which they thought was super cool!

Katie K's Mad Science 10th Birthday Blast Experiments:

  • Slime
  • Instant snow
  • Color changing milk
  • Lava lamps
  • Elephant toothpaste
  • Also had a microscope with different slides of cool stuff for the kids to look at, a tornado tube, science books, and beakers with dry ice

If you throw a Mad Science party, we'd love to show it off, so please add it to our main site!

Planning My Daughter's 4th Birthday - Cupcake Toppers From Two Sugar Babies

I'm a big fan of edible cupcakes toppers. I've never even tasted fondant but I think fondant toppers add such a special touch to a party.

So for my daughter's birthday, I've vetoed cake. The logistics are just too hard. Trying to cut it and serve it to 60 hungry people in under five minutes... impossible. So cupcakes it is!

I approached Charynn from Two Sugar Babies about designing toppers for me. I've been a fan of Two Sugar Babies for sometime as I've ogled their stuff on Etsy.

I sent Charynn the custom mermaid designs Lindi from Love the Day created, and given my limited budget, here's what Charynn came up with. How sweet are these sea shell and starfish toppers? I couldn't be more delighted!

No one in our preschool has done fondant cupcake toppers before, so I'm excited to see the reaction! I'll keep you posted...

And thank you Charynn for creating such loveliness for Adelaine!
