Pom Pom Mice Craft DIY

Pom pom mice DIY

If you're looking for a fun project to do over winter break with your kids, Nicole from Tikkido is here today with an adorable craft to try -- precious pom pom mice!

Perhaps it's a legacy of watching The Nutcracker ballet many, many times, but there's something that just feels right about little mice during the holidays. Dapper, well dressed, adorable little mice, mind you. Like these little charmers. Here's how to make them...

Pom Pom Mice Tutorial

Materials:

  • White and pink felt
  • White yarn
  • White pipe cleaners
  • Two small black beads
  • One small pink bead
  • Scraps of fabric
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
Directions:

Start by making two simple yarn pom poms, one for the head and one for the body. Take a piece of yarn (about 5 inches long) and stretch it out along your index finger. Take the skein of yarn, and start winding it around your finger AND the short piece of yarn. Wind wind wind--more than you'd expect!

Pom Pom Mice Tutorial

When you're done winding, carefully pull the yarn off your finger, being sure to keep the short strand of yarn threaded through the tunnel of yarn you just slipped off. tie the short piece of yarn tightly.

Pom Pom Mice Tutorial

Use sharp scissors to cut all of the loops of yarn. This creates your basic shaggy yarn pom pom.

Pom Pom Mice Tutorial

Use the scissors to give the shaggy pom pom a haircut, trimming just a bit at a time, and shaping the pom pom into a teardrop-shaped mouse head.

Pom Pom Mice Tutorial

Make a slightly larger oval pom pom for the body of the mouse.

Pom Pom Mice Tutorial

Use a hot glue gun to glue the head pom pom to the body pom pom. Add pipe cleaner arms and legs to the mouse body. The arms are made of a single standard pipe cleaner cut in half. The legs are a single uncut standard pipe cleaner. Attach the arms and legs by simply winding tightly around the body of the mouse. Use the remaining half-pipe cleaner as the tail. Attach that by gluing it in place with the hot glue gun.

Pom Pom Mice Tutorial

Cut a petal of white felt for each of the mouse's ears. Cut a smaller petal of pink felt for the inner ear. You can sew the two pieces together, or simply use a hot glue gun to attach the two pieces.

Pom Pom Mice Tutorial

Dab a bit of hot glue at the base of the ear and pinch together, to create the perfect mouse-ear shape. Use the hot glue gun to attach the ears to the mouse's head.

Use scraps of fabric and lace to fashion a dress for your little rodent friend. No sewing necessary -- I just glued the dresses in place with that handy-dandy hot glue gun!

Pom Pom Mice Tutorial

Attach two black beads for eyes and one pink bead for a dainty little nose. 4mm round beads worked perfectly for the mice ornaments I made.

Pom Pom Mice Tutorial

Tuck in the branches of your Christmas tree -- if you can persuade your children to stop playing with them! It's a good thing they're soft and surprisingly durable. My girls can't get enough of them.

Polymer Clay Christmas Ornament Craft

Polymer clay ornament DIY

It was so fun to make these star Christmas ornaments out of polymer clay. I felt like I was sculpting in kindergarten again. I loved that I was able to stamp them with sentiments that are meaningful to my heart.

Supplies:

  • Polymer clay you can find at your local craft store
  • Cookie cutter
  • Rolling pin
  • Parchment paper
  • Alphabet stamp kit
  • Ribbon

polymer-clay-christmas-ornament-craft-3

Directions:
  • Soften your polymer clay in your hands, working it for a few minutes until it's malleable.
  • Once it is softened, roll it between two pieces of parchment paper using a rolling pin, until it’s about ¼ inch thick.
  • Using a cookie cutter, cut out your ornament shape.
  • Stamp with any words you like using an alphabet stamp set. If you don’t have a stamp set, you can also write on the clay with pencil.
  • Use a complimentary clay color to add little details… I added polka dots, a heart, and even a mini ribbon.
  • Using a sharp object, poke a hole toward the top of the ornament for the ribbon to thread through. I used an open paperclip to make mine.
  • Bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 230 degrees until they become hard.
  • Once cool, thread your ribbon and tie, then hang the ornaments on your tree.
  • Wait for people to notice how pretty they are :)

Want to See Great Holiday Pins on Pinterest?

Holiday Cheer pinterest board

I was asked by the Solo Cup Company (the makers of the famous red plastic cups) to be one of their guest pinners on their Holiday Cheer Pinterest board.

There's nothing I enjoy more than browsing through Pinterest looking at inspiring images. In fact, a lot of times, I have to pull myself away from Pinterest because an hour has passed and I'm still in the infinite scroll down to the bottom of the page! Who's been there?

I tried to find pins that were either stunning, creative, delicious, fun, or just plain adorable like this one.

Baby Santa Claus

Check out the board and see what you think. I know there will be an image or two you'll want to repin and maybe even try.

And remember, red Solo Cups might be a natural fit with your holiday decor. :)

This is a sponsored post by Solo Cup Company, but all the opinions are from Catch My Party.

Family Holiday Gathering on a Budget

Budget family Christmas party

I'm excited to introduce our new party styling contributor, Laura Aguirre from Laura's Little Party. I've been a fan of Laura's parties for some time. Her parties are always vibrant, stylish, and filled with unexpected details. Today Laura is sharing how to put together a budget holiday gathering that you can pull together on the fly. Welcome, Laura!

Holiday gatherings will soon be in full swing! This is truly my favorite time of year -- delicious food, beautiful decorations, and spending time with loved ones!

Time is precious, especially now, as we try to fit holiday fun into our already busy schedules. Festive parties don’t need to break the bank. Here are some easy ideas, and fun party inspiration for your next holiday gathering!

Play with Color...

Don't be afraid to play with patterns and color this holiday season. This year, I'm going with stripes, polka dots, and chevron patterns. Plastic cups, polka dotted paper straws, and festive napkins, all in different patterns, certainly makes for a fun & festive table!

Budget family Christmas party ideas

Don't be afraid of paper and plastic tableware...

So many festive paper plates are out this year. Using paper plates always makes for quick & easy clean up! I found some darling plates at Target. For the table cover, I opted to use a red & white chevron piece of fabric  I picked up from JoAnn’s.

I fell in love with these red mustache napkins. I put them at each kid’s setting, and thought they worked perfectly with the plastic Santa cups that I found at Walmart the year before. I covered the bamboo utensils in cute polka dotted washi tape, and added paper straws to the adult cups.

Budget family Christmas party ideas

Feel free to mix everyone at the table...

I normally set up a separate kids' table during our holiday gatherings, but this year, I thought it would be nice to have both kids, and adults, sit together and share in the conversation.

I painted an old high chair in a bright, festive red! I quickly whipped up a JOY banner to help make even the smallest guest feel like he had a special place at our table.

Budget family Christmas party ideas

Add a couple of easy store-bought items to your dessert table...

Because my guests typically offer to bring lots & lots of deliciously rich desserts, I usually add a couple of easy, store-bought items to display on my dessert table.

This year I added cupcakes with Santa toppers I found in the dollar section at Target, powdered donuts, red velvet cookies, and mini bubble gum machines for the kids!

And make sure to set out some take home boxes so your guests don't go home empty-handed. I found these fun polka dotted boxes at Target.

How To Throw A Ladies' Night Holiday Party + Mexican Wedding Cake Cookie Recipe

Mexican Wedding Cake Cookie Recipe

I was asked by Sauza to come up with ideas for hosting a Ladies' Night Holiday Party, incorporating Sauza Sparkling Margarita into the celebration. (Don't twist my arm!)

While the Sauza Sparkling Margarita comes in three flavors (Original Lime, Wild Berry, and Mango Peach) I wanted to use the Original Lime as my inspiration since I like my margaritas on the straight up traditional side, so my dessert of choice... Mexican cake cookies with lime zest!

mexican-wedding-cake-cookies-recipe-60

I love the look of Mexican cake cookies. They remind me of little snowballs, perfect for a holiday party. Plus there's something about them that feels girly and dainty, don't you think?

Mexican Wedding Cake Cookie Recipe

The lime zest in the cookies perfectly balanced the citrusy effervescence of the Sparkling Margarita.

The sparkling margarita is a nice alternative to champagne, especially if you're looking for a drink that feels a little more playful and unconventional. I could absolutely see my friends and I at a party, enjoying this sweet, smooth, tart cocktail.

To fancy it up, I recommend rubbing your champagne flutes in kosher salt and adding a wedge of lime to each glass.

mexican-wedding-cake-cookies-recipe-2

Then to decorate the champagne flutes, I used the printable party circles from our "Oh what fun!" free holiday printable set. I just punched a hole in each one and tied them on with gold ribbon.

I also printed out the "Oh what fun!" welcome sign to decorate my table and to set the stage for the fun to come!

The free printable set includes: a welcome sign, a banner, cupcake toppers, invitations,  gift tags, mini candy bar wrappers,  water bottle wrappers, menu cards, and straw flags.

And now for the cookies, which are super simple to make...

MEXICAN WEDDING CAKE COOKIES

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks) at room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lime zest
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup of finely chopped walnuts
Mexican Wedding Cake Cookie Recipe

Directions:

Put the room temperature butter in a mixing bowl, and beat with an electric mixer on high for about 2 minutes until it is light and fluffy. Beat in 1/2 cup powdered sugar (save the remaining to toss on the baked cookies).

Mix in the vanilla, cinnamon, salt and lime zest. Now add the flour, mixing in about 1/3 at a time. Last, fold in the finely chopped walnuts. You can use a food processor, or even just put them in a plastic bag and pound them with a meat tenderizer or rolling pin (that's what I did).

Mexican Wedding Cake Cookie Recipe

Cover the dough and chill for about 30 minutes. You can preheat the oven to 350 F while it chills.

Roll the dough into balls (about 2 tablespoons) and bake for 18-20 minutes, until they brown on the bottom, and just start to brown on the top. Let them cool for 15 minutes, and toss them in a bowl with 1 cup of powdered sugar.
