My daughter, Lainey, who is six, loves to read. She's still perfecting her skills, but she couldn't be more excited about it. I think reading has unlocked a new world for her. She no longer has to ask, "What does that say?" and I think that makes her feel powerful and independent.
So I was happy when I was asked to blog about McDonald's new Happy Meals that include books. For the whole month of November, all McDonald's Happy Meals will have a book inside. What a smart way to encourage young readers! But, honestly, Lainey was even more excited about this blog post than me.
Yesterday I took her to McDonald's to get her beloved Chicken McNuggets, and she finished the book inside her Happy Meal even before she finished her French fries.
Her favorite page involved underwear!! She wanted me to take a picture of her pointing it out so you could see how funny it was, too!
Since Lainey was a baby, I have always made it a priority to read to her. It's been one of our favorite ways to spend time together, snuggled up on the couch or in the bed, enjoying a good book. When she was younger I read her all the Pippi Longstocking books and all the Little House on the Prairie books.
Now it's fun to watch her read on her own. Some of her favorite book series are:
- The Never Girls -- A group of friends who find a secret way of getting to Pixie Hallow and meeting fairies
- Ivy & Bean -- Two funny best friends who get into a whole lot of crazy trouble
- Heidi Hecklebeck -- A normal girl who is also a witch
- Frannie K. Stein -- A girl mad scientist who loves to create monsters and machines
- Stella Batts -- An eight-year-old who is writing her autobiography
- Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew -- Modern mysteries with Nancy Drew at the helm
It's so amazing watching my daughter grow up!

Yep, it was a big day in our household. Lainey headed off to kindergarten, and you can see by her face she was VERY excited!
I used our free first day of school printable signs for this picture (we've got every grade through high school).
The border of the sign was supposed to be red, but because our red ink ran out, we got a yellow border instead. Still super cute and what a momentous day! (Btw, did you notice her tooth?)
