Magical Forest Dinner Party

We recently threw a dinner party for our good friend Lindee’s birthday. We decided we wanted to do a take on a woodland theme. There are so many adorable paper goods and decorations that work for this party concept, but we decided to do a slightly more grown-up spin on it and make it a magical forest dinner party!

We set up a table for 10 running the length of Susie’s living room. The branches in the center vase came from a tree in her backyard. We randomly stuck tiny, champagne colored jewels on the leaves of the branches so that they sparkled in the candlelight, creating a magical canopy. The table decor featured several of our thrift store finds, including a large ceramic walnut, a squirrel statue, and a yellow glass terrarium vase, mixed with other things from our own collections.

We started the evening with assorted cheeses, marcona almonds and fruit served with a cocktail made from white wine, elderflower liqueur and garnished with an edible flower.

For dinner, we served an arugula salad with a caramelized shallot vinaigrette, wild mushroom risotto and an assortment of roasted vegetables drizzled with sea salt, butter and fresh herbs.

A wood lazy-susan that we found at the thrift store made the perfect cake plate for Lindee’s birthday cake, a chai spice cake, with a honeyed mascarpone filling and bittersweet chocolate ganache frosting. We decorated the cake with a small plastic deer, tiny pine cones, dark chocolate Pocky cookie sticks and a ribbon wrap with glittered letters, spelling her name.

On many levels, this was just a simple dinner party to celebrate a friend’s birthday. We wanted to create a special ambiance but didn’t want to break the bank doing so. Lately it seems, that so many parties, especially those featured on the internet, are over-the-top with themed, coordinated decor that inevitably ends up costing a lot of money to pull off. We’ve never felt this is necessary. Just a little imagination, a lot of candle light, and $20 spent at the thrift store!
