Party Recap...
I threw together a quick budget friendly Kentucky Derby gambling & appetizer party in a couple of days using what I had in my party stash & picked up a few quick last minute items. But I thought I'd share, was a fun little get together, something different & there wasn't a whoooole lot out there as far as ideas if someone decided they'd like to host one, so this might spark some inspiration if someone really wanted to do it up :)...I ended up going with Red Roses (Derby classic) & Damask as my theme so red/wt/blk were the colors...Don't forget your BIG hat ;)
Party Highlights
Best Moment
Watching the race & everyone yelling, the 2nd place horse was in the lead for most of the race until the last leg when "I'll Have Another" took the win, hilarious to watch those almost winners!
Best Dressed
We had a "BEST BIG HAT" contest, winner won a lottery scratch off ticket attached to a winner's ribbon (dollar store :) )
What People Ate
Friends brought appetizers & desserts to share & I made some Kentucky Derby Traditions....Benedictine finger sandwiches (White bread, sliced cucumber & Benedictine (grated cucumber, onion, cream cheese, mayo, salt)), Spiced Pecans (I got a BIG bag of pecans at costco that lasted for these & 2 of the desserts) which are coated in egg white & tossed with sugar, salt, cin, nutmeg, cloves, etc (SUPER yummy, want to make for even just non party snacks at home again), fruit, veggies, Spinache Artichoke dip (Yum!), licorice, trail mix to snack on & a 7 layer dip/chips a friend brought to bring in a lil Cinco de Mayo!
What People Drank
Cocktails, beer & iced tea...And had the mint, sugar & bourbon out for the derby traditional drink "Mint Juleps"
Dessert
Kentucky Derby Pie (Chopped pecans, chocolate, bourbon, etc), Bourbon Balls (Chopped pecans, Bourbon, crushed vanilla wafers & rolled in sugar)-watch out these were strong :), Carrot Cake cupcakes w cream cheese frosting & a rosette on top & my friend brought yummy peanut butter/choc rice krispies :)
Activities / Games
We gambled $5 a bet on the race...each person chose there 3 picks for the "Win"(1st), "Place"(2nd) & "Show"(3rd)...based on the results points were given to correct bets (5,3,1)...Person w most points won ALSO: I had cut strips with each horse from the race printed on it & had everyone choose one, person with winning horse on their paper won a scratch off lottery ticket attached to a winner's ribbon as a just for fun (and in case not everyone bet $)
Budget
Super Cheap! Used mostly what I had at home & shopped mostly for decoration at dollar store
