Party Recap

Who says pirate parties are for boys? Clearly, they haven’t seen “Descendants 2”! Samantha’s 7th birthday just happened to fall on the same day as the premiere of the Disney film, so Aye, Matey, it was going down…. Samantha’s favorite character was the pirate Uma, so using her outfit as inspiration, we designed a girly pirate themed party that can be replicated for any scallywag-loving lass.
Since the movie was premiering the same day as her birthday, dressing up as Uma was a given. Kids were encouraged to dress as pirates, princesses, etc. Some kids even came as other “Descendants” characters. We layered teal table linens with burlap and purple runners to keep it from being too “princess”, and topped the tables with sand filled fishbowls (a steal from the 99 Cent Store!) with a pirate ship mast adorned with an “S” and “7.” Dowel rods from Michael’s were used as the mast, while netting- also from Michael’s- was cut up to wrap around the bowls. We added a “Descendants 2” tag to bring the movie into the design. The table skirt on the buffet was created using crepe streamers and mimicked the look of Uma’s dress and hair. The backdrop included the pirate mast (closet dowels from Home Depot!), a Happy Birthday banner with Jolly Roger accents, and even an Uma doll in a “crow’s nest” watching over the festivities. The buffet featured food & drinks named after elements from the movie and napkin/utensil roll-ups with squid “charms”, inspired by the motif on Uma’s sail in the film.
To keep the kids entertained- and tire them out- a giant pirate ship bouncy was the perfect choice. They could also opt to create bracelets inspired by some of the main characters- Uma (natch), Mal, Evie and Harry Hook. A temporary tattoo station was also set up for anyone who wanted to get inked. The little scallywags loved the foam swords. En garde! The soundtracks from the two “Descendants” movies played while they, well, played.
No kids party is complete without a little loot to take home! The gift bags were also customized, giving the guests an option to take one home based on their favorite character. Muslin bags were stenciled with Jolly Rogers using craft paint and filled with “Descendants 2” pencils and pads, chocolate coins, and nail polish that corresponded to the characters outfits. Boys got nautical themed stamps & ink in place of polish. Fans of the movie stuck around to catch the premiere… Long Live Evil!
